Learning Objectives:
In a rapidly evolving global environment career management is becoming increasingly essential as workforce requirements are determined largely by competitive pressures, economic trends, accelerated technological development and business strategies. Organizational success will demand continuous human resource development to meet these requirements.
This Career Management Program provides employees at all levels with the opportunity to assess aptitudes, interest, preferences, values and traits against corporate business strategies; to become flexible enough to change with shifting priorities; acquire essential core competencies and to develop an integrated Short- and Long-Term Career Management Plan.
Program Content:
Setting the stage
- The program starts with an introduction by a senior manager, this will highlight and demonstrate the importance that the organization places on the initiative and will be instrumental to the strategic direction of the organization.
Warm-up
- Career success stories shared illustrating different dimensions of “success”. Program content and material is introduced including the Career Plan.
Understanding ourselves
- Focus is on the participants understanding themselves and their personal preferences using a pre-distributed self-scoring instrument. Exercises will underline the different dimensions of personality and relate these to career choices.
- Personal values are prioritized, ranked, and aligned.
- Skills/interest levels are identified and plotted on a grid.
Understanding and increasing effective behaviour in the work group
- Stages of work group development and Performance Dimension Model are introduced.
- Participants identify work group strengths and opportunities for improvement.
Developing and managing relationships
- Introduction of Situational Leadership grid.
- Identify when mentoring/coaching is desirable and how to build and strengthen effective relationships with the manager.
Understanding the organizational culture (values, beliefs, assumptions)
- Review of organizational values, and how they relate to personal values.
Are they congruent or are there fundamental differences?
Skills awareness/development
- Covers areas for skill development and is weighted to address specific areas of focus for the organization
Retention
- What must the organization do to retain you?
- What must you do to be valued by the organization? A survey instrument is used.
Conceptualizing long term goal or goals
- Visualize where you see yourself in 5 to 10 years.
- Self S.W.O.T – identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats.
- Assess the risks, plot technical and interpersonal skills, on grid.
- What are the 3 next steps along the chosen path (goal).
- What is the detailed action plan(s) to achieve goal(s) (SMART).
- Complete the Career Management Plan and commit.
- Share the future
Manager’s Program
The Manager’s Program includes a walk through the Career Management Program.
In addition they will receive a career coaching module covering:
- The different manager roles to facilitate employee career coaching.
- Tools to enable managers to understand their coaching style.
- Employee retention including the cost of replacing critical talent.
- Integrating Career Plans and Performance Management.
